Tag Organization & Maintenance

Tags complement information that category and location cannot capture. For example, an item might be stored in “Storage Room”, categorized under “Outdoor Gear”, and tagged with “Camping”. Searching by the “Camping” tag brings together related items across different closets and cabinets.

Understanding What Tags Do Best

• Category defines the inherent nature of an item, such as “Books” or “Kitchenware”.
• Location defines where the item currently lives physically, such as “Storage Room / Upper Shelf”.
• Tags capture personal cross-cutting contexts that matter to you, such as “Needs Repair”, “Travel”, or “Kids”.

An item can have multiple tags. Tag names are entirely up to you; there is no need to engineer an exhaustive hierarchy upfront—begin with terms you naturally reach for when searching.

Adding Tags to Items

1. Open Forest or Overview from the bottom bar and start adding an item.
2. Locate the Tags section in the add form.
3. Select an existing tag or type a new name to create one.
4. Save the item. You can inspect and adjust its tags anytime in the item detail view.

Finding Items by Tag

Open the filter panel in Overview, locate the Tags filter, and select a tag. The filtered list narrows your collection instantly. If multiple criteria are selected, you can further combine tags with categories, locations, or statuses.

If target items don’t appear, check active filter criteria: existing constraints might conceal records. Clear filters and try again.

Maintaining Tags in Tag Management

Navigate to the tools area via the More tab in the bottom bar and open Tag Management. Here you can review and maintain all tags across your forest:

Rename

When a tag has a typo or you want to standardize phrasing, select the tag and choose Rename. This updates the tag’s label across all associated items.

Merge

When two tags share the same intent—such as “Camping” and “Camp Gear”—merge them into one to prevent scattered search results. Select the tags to merge and choose which target name to preserve.

Favorites

Star high-frequency tags as favorites so they stay pinned at the top of tag pickers and lists for quick access.

Delete

Before deleting a tag, verify whether any items still rely on it. Deleting a tag removes the association between that tag and its items; this does not delete the items themselves, but the removed tag links would need to be re-added individually.

Cultivating Sustainable Tag Habits

• Use concise, intuitive words to prevent fragmented synonyms.
• Tags should enrich context, not redundantly duplicate item names, categories, or rooms.
• Start with actionable, search-driven scenarios like “Needs Repair” or “Pack for Trip” rather than tagging everything exhaustively.
• Occasionally review Tag Management to clean up duplicates or retired temporary tags.
