Tagging Essentials
Use tags to organize items by purpose, scenario, or project, and retrieve related belongings across different spaces.
Page Overview
Categories vs. Tags
A category represents an item’s primary physical classification (e.g., Electronics, Kitchenware). Tags, on the other hand, provide flexible, cross-cutting themes that span across different categories and locations. For example, a camping lantern and an insulated thermos belong to different categories and live in different cabinets, but both can carry the tag #camping.
Think of tags as custom search clues designed to answer: “Which belongings relate to this activity or situation?” (e.g., #moving, #travel, #repair-needed, #spare-parts).
Adding Tags
When adding or editing an item, look for the Tags section. You can choose from existing tags or type a new one. Before creating a new tag, check if a similar one already exists to avoid fragmenting the same topic under multiple variations.
A good tag is short, memorable, and reusable. For instance, standardize on #camping rather than mixing #camp, #camping-gear, and #camping-trip unless you genuinely want to track them separately.
Grouping Items by Tags
When you want to assemble all items under a theme, simply tap any tag shown in an item detail or list to display all related records. If the current view provides a tag filter, select the tag from your filter criteria.
For example, before heading outdoors, filter by #camping to systematically verify your lantern, first aid kit, tent pegs, and power bank. Remember that tags do not track physical storage spots—to retrieve the item, check the Location field in its details.
Cultivating Good Tagging Habits
- Observe which themes you repeatedly search for in daily life.
- Tag only themes that serve practical retrieval needs.
- Keep naming consistent across your forest.
- Periodically review your tag list in Tag Management to merge synonyms.
Tags are optional; you don’t need to tag every single possession. Starting with one or two clear themes is the best way to keep your forest clean.
Advanced Tag Management
You can manage your entire tag taxonomy, rename tags, merge synonyms, or favorite frequent tags. Before merging or deleting tags, read Advanced Tag Workflows.
